Vandalism of mountain summits in the Dolomites

Overview

A series of vandalism incidents has targeted religious and commemorative items on mountain summits in the Italian Dolomites.

On October 5, 2026, vandals used specialized tools to detach a Madonna statue from its pedestal on the Croda Granda peak. The perpetrators also destroyed two memorial plaques and stole the summit register. The municipality of Gosaldo filed a formal complaint following the discovery of the damage.

By October 9, 2026, the situation escalated with an incident on Monte Pramaggiore in the Friulian Dolomites. An unidentified individual, described by some as the ‘Jack the Ripper’ of the Alps, removed the mountain’s summit cross and destroyed the summit book. This individual has reportedly been targeting various summits, leaving behind torn books and cryptic messages regarding nature and human waste.
