Vandalism of Radnóti Miklós statue in Serbia

Overview

A bronze statue of Hungarian poet Radnóti Miklós in Bor, Serbia, was vandalized. The monument, a gift from Hungary in 1979, commemorates the poet’s forced labor service in the mining town during 1944. This incident follows a previous theft of the original statue in 2001.

The Vojvodina Hungarian National Council filed a criminal complaint regarding the damage to the 600 kg replacement, which was erected in 2004. Council president Fremond Árpád called on local authorities to clean and protect the monument.
