Vatican response to Marko Rupnik abuse allegations

Overview

Following allegations of serial psychological, spiritual, and sexual abuse against dozens of women, the controversial artwork of former Jesuit Marko Rupnik is being removed or obscured from Catholic institutions.

In late August 2026, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes announced that mosaics by Rupnik at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary would be covered indefinitely. This decision was made ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s scheduled visit to France in late September 2026, with the Bishop stating the move was intended to “show respect to victims of abuse” and prioritize those seeking healing.

By the end of August, Pope Leo XIV expanded these measures by ordering the removal of Rupnik’s artwork from the Vatican News website. The Vatican’s communications office has also been instructed to stop using the mosaics for illustrations in publications. Furthermore, the apostolic nunciature in Paris confirmed that no papal celebrations will be held in the chapel decorated with Rupnik’s mosaics during the upcoming apostolic trip to France.
