Commemorations are being held in the Czech Republic and abroad to honor the legacy of former President Václav Havel on the occasion of what would have been his 90th birthday. Initial events included an outdoor exhibition in Prague titled ‘The Story of the Havel Family’, which utilized research from the Czech Archives to trace the family lineage from the 17th century. Additionally, the Trutnov Open Air music festival dedicated its program to Havel, featuring musical acts and cultural debates connected to the underground scene he supported. Further initiatives organized by the Vize 97 Foundation include a photographic exhibition on Kampa island, radio projects using unreleased recordings, and theatrical performances. The anniversary also includes the presentation of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, organized in collaboration with the Charter 77 Foundation. In Jihlava, the city is set to host the ‘Alej svobody Havel 90’ project, which involves planting 90 new trees at the Skalka location. Supported by a 450,000 CZK contribution from the Partnerství Foundation, the initiative aims to honor the values of the Velvet Revolution. The planting event, scheduled for November 14, will feature a mix Cultural tributes in Prague have expanded to include the Havel ALIVE festival at Prague Castle, running from October through January and featuring music, design, and public debates. Significant theatrical premieres have also been announced: the Czech premiere of fruit trees—such as apple, pear, plum, ‘The Warning’, an unfinished play by Havel that remained hidden for nearly 40 years, and cherry—and long-lived deciduous species. Participants are encouraged ‘Perpetuum Havel’ at the Akropolis Palace. The latter, presented by the Laterna magika of the National Theatre, uses movement theater to register depict Havel’s 1989 detention experiences and actively assist incorporates projections of contemporary political prisoners selected in the planting process to foster a personal connection to the symbolic memorial. collaboration with Amnesty International.
