Vehicle arson attacks in Ciudad Juárez

Overview

In Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, a series of arson attacks has targeted vehicles over a two-day period. The incidents began with an attack at an MG car dealership on Avenida Ejército Nacional, where surveillance footage showed an individual spraying vehicles with a liquid, believed to be gasoline, before setting them on fire. This initial incident destroyed at least five 2026 model vehicles, with damages estimated to exceed 1.32 million pesos.

Following the dealership attack, the scale of the arson increased. Authorities reported a total of 11 vehicles set on fire within two days, including three personnel transport trucks on Wednesday and eight additional vehicles across three separate locations on Thursday. These locations included Avenida Ejército Nacional, the Eréndira subdivision, and the Barrio Alto neighborhood. While some local reports suggested the motive might be extortion, the Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) stated the event did not appear to be related to extortion.

In a recent development, state security forces arrested 23-year-old Noha Alexandre S. O. in connection with the MG dealership attack. Authorities used surveillance cameras and the Centinela Platform to track the suspect to the Jardines del Bosque neighborhood. During the arrest, the suspect reportedly reacted violently toward officers, and officials noted a “strong smell of gasoline” emanating from him. The suspect has been placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry. The Unión de Concesionarios de Automóviles Nuevos (UCAN) has called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability for the economic damage caused to the dealership and its employees.
