During the first seven months of 2026, vehicle theft trends in the Netherlands showed significant regional disparities despite a relatively stable national figure, which saw a minor decrease of 0.5% compared to the previous year.

Rotterdam experienced a sharp increase in thefts, rising by nearly 30% with an additional 706 incidents compared to the same period in 2025. While Amsterdam remains the city with the highest number of thefts, it reported a decrease from 4,079 to 3,533 incidents, narrowing the gap with Rotterdam. Together, these two cities account for 27.5% of all registered motor vehicle thefts in the country.

Other regions reported varying trends. Increases were noted in The Hague, Utrecht, Nijmegen, and Schiedam. In the province of Fryslân, Leeuwarden saw a nearly fourfold increase, rising from 36 to 136 incidents, though experts caution that large percentage rises in smaller municipalities can be misleading due to low absolute numbers.
