Veneto regional autonomy movement

The Veneto region is advancing its pursuit of differentiated autonomy within the Italian political framework. The process initially focused on preparing for a Regional Council session to discuss four key areas: civil protection, professions, supplementary and integrative social security, and health protection coordination.

Following the approval of final agreement schemes by the First Council Commission, the initiative has moved closer to granting the region independent management of specific competencies. Regional President Luca Zaia characterized the move as a “strike against centralism” intended to foster local decision-making. While proponents view this as fulfilling a 2017 referendum mandate, critics have raised concerns regarding service levels and the political nature of the process.

The next steps involve approval by the Regional Council and subsequent transmission to the national government for parliamentary review. Although the current focus remains on the initial four sectors, regional leaders have expressed an objective to eventually secure all 23 competencies permitted by the Constitution.
