Venezuela higher education reform efforts
Overview
Venezuela’s Minister of Higher Education, Ana María Sanjuán, reported a significant gap in the National Admission System (SNI), noting that approximately 144,000 applicants lack university placements. Data showed that only 65% of total demand was met by the public higher education system, with institutions like the Universidad Central de Venezuela facing extreme disparities between applicants and available spots.
In response to these capacity and exclusion issues, the Ministry proposed modernizing the University Law. Following the initial report, Ministry officials met with student federations at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello to establish a collaborative roadmap. The Ministry stated that the new legal framework will be constructed through mutual agreement with universities and student representatives to address enrollment, retention, and graduation needs.
