Venice spritz ingredient fraud and theft
Overview
Authorities and businesses in Venice have dealt with two distinct incidents involving spritz cocktail ingredients.
In late September, police in the Cannaregio district seized alcohol products following a fraud investigation. Inspectors found bottles of brands such as Aperol and Campari with tampered seals and detached tax stamps. The investigation suggested that lower-quality liquids were being decanted into original brand packaging to increase profit margins. Municipal Commerce Councilor Sebastiano Costalonga stated that such practices “damage the reputation of honest business owners and mislead consumers.”
In mid-October, the Orient Experience restaurant reported a burglary where a thief specifically targeted spritz ingredients. The perpetrator bypassed expensive wines and premium liquors to steal approximately ten packages of products including Aperol, Campari, and Select. The total cost of the stolen goods and door damage was estimated at 1,000 euros.
