Venue preparations for Badminton World Championships

Overview

In preparation for the BWF World Championships scheduled for August 17–23, the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi has undergone extensive renovations. These upgrades were implemented by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Badminton Association of India (BAI) to address criticisms regarding cleanliness, pollution, and animal interference encountered during the India Open earlier in the year.

Specific improvements include deep cleaning, toilet renovations, seat replacements, and roof waterproofing. To manage bird interference, officials have applied non-toxic slippery gel to roof beams and imported specialized sound machines from the United States that mimic predatory bird calls to deter pigeons. Other measures include upgrading lighting with Indonesian consultancy, installing reinforced glass doors, and managing stray animals.

BWF officials and BAI Secretary General Sanjay Mishra have noted that recent inspections show the venue is now clean, well-ventilated, and prepared to host over 400 players.
