Veracruz mayoral shooting and legal reform efforts

Overview

Following a shooting during a patron saint festival in Chumatlán, Veracruz authorities began searching for Isaac García Álvarez, the mayor of Coahuitlán. Witnesses identified the mayor as the individual responsible for the gunfire, which resulted in four injuries, including a minor and a municipal police officer.

In response to the allegations, Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García stated that the mayor must answer to the State Attorney General’s Office. Subsequently, the Veracruz government announced an initiative for the local Congress to limit the legal immunity, or ‘fuero’, of mayors and trustees. Secretary of Government Ricardo Ahued noted that the proposal aims to ensure immunity does not obstruct investigations into alleged crimes committed by municipal officials.
