Vienna public housing initiatives

In early July 2026 Vienna broke ground on its 28th municipal housing complex in the Donaustadt district. The project on Melangasse 1A will ultimately deliver about 320 affordable apartments, with an initial phase of 114 units slated for completion by autumn 2029. The development features one‑ to four‑room flats with private outdoor spaces, green inner courtyards, community rooms, a ground‑floor shop, extensive bicycle parking and both underground and district car garages.

Later that month, five protected 1930s Werkbundsiedlung houses in Hietzing were finished after a full thermal renovation and decarbonisation programme that began in 2011. Historic façades were retained while renewable‑energy systems—including geothermal heat‑pumps, photovoltaic panels and heat‑recovery technology—were installed. The renovated buildings are now offered for long‑term, rent‑free leasing, illustrating Vienna’s effort to combine historic preservation with climate‑neutral, affordable housing.

Both projects underscore the city’s broader strategy to expand social housing stock, improve sustainability standards and protect architectural heritage.
