Vietnam’s AI strategy, launched in July 2026, continues to broaden its application across key sectors. After earlier pilots of AI tools for film restoration, subtitles, dubbing and museum tour‑guiding robots, the government’s push to embed AI throughout the cultural industry intensified. Officials cite AI’s potential to preserve heritage, promote national identity and enhance competitiveness, but warn that widespread training on large datasets raises copyright concerns, many cultural assets remain undigitised, and a shortage of artist‑tech talent limits adoption. Dr Tran Kim Ba of the Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences called for targeted policy and investment to overcome data gaps, talent shortages and the high costs that burden small creators. At the same time, the AI agenda expanded into the health sector. In late July, Dong Tháp’s provincial health department, together with FPT Corp. and Cisco Systems, announced a joint program to convert hospitals into AI‑enabled smart facilities, featuring standardized health data, electronic medical records and AI diagnostics and management tools. Separately, OmiGroup launched Omi Health Tech to build data platforms and AI solutions for Vietnam’s growing HealthTech market, aligning with national digital‑transformation goals. A parallel development is the articulation of an AI‑sovereignty strategy that prioritises specialised, data‑driven systems built on domestic high‑quality datasets. The government argues that large general‑purpose models are costly and vulnerable to foreign semiconductor supply constraints, especially under U.S. export restrictions. Modelling suggests such specialised AI could lift GDP by up to 2 percentage points by 2030, especially in IT, finance, scientific‑technical services and manufacturing, while officials caution about infrastructure, data, skills and regulatory gaps that could trigger unemployment or inequality.
