On August 15, 2026, a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 operating flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi experienced a technical incident during takeoff at Munich Airport. The aircraft overran the south runway, resulting in a tail strike and damage to runway lighting and infrastructure. After circling Bavaria for approximately two hours to dump fuel, the aircraft returned to land on the north runway, where it suffered shredded tires and required a tow. All 287 people on board were reported safe and uninjured. A preliminary report from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) indicates that the aircraft failed to accelerate for approximately two seconds midway down the runway. Due to insufficient remaining runway length to abort the takeoff safely, the pilot continued the procedure by applying maximum thrust and rotating the aircraft. Following takeoff, the crew received warnings regarding a potential tailstrike and unusual tire pressure; four of the eight main landing gear tires were subsequently found to be damaged or burst. During the technical inspection upon return, smoke was observed rising from the landing gear. The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has taken over the investigation, securing flight data and voice ~~recorders for analysis.~~ recorders. The BFU is also investigating a ~~separate, related~~ separate incident on the same runway involving a Lufthansa Airbus A380 that landed ~~too early and damaged runway threshold lighting. As~~ short of the threshold on August 18, ~~investigators are analyzing~~ damaging the approach lighting system. The Ministry of Public Security will assist in verifying information to ensure aviation security. Authorities have been directed to conduct a thorough review of aircraft ~~maintenance within Vietnamese carriers.~~ maintenance, technical inspection processes, and crew training to prevent future occurrences and uphold passenger rights.
