Vietnam efforts to combat IUU fishing

Vietnam is implementing various measures to address Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in an effort to have the European Commission lift its ‘yellow card’ warning regarding the nation’s seafood exports.

In the maritime sector, the Vietnamese Navy’s 682nd Brigade has launched legal awareness campaigns and provided material support to local fishermen. This assistance includes distributing educational materials, national flags, and essential supplies such as rice and life jackets to fishing households, alongside providing free medical services at various ports.

Concurrently, provincial authorities in Ha Tinh and Quang Tri are intensifying fleet management and electronic traceability. In Quang Tri, officials are reviewing vessel documentation and food safety commitments, noting that while most vessels are licensed, some remain ineligible to operate. Local government is also exploring occupational conversion support for those unable to meet regulations. In Ha Tinh, efforts are focused on reinforcing vessel surveillance and electronic traceability to ensure compliance with international standards.
