Vietnam-South Korea scientific and economic cooperation

Overview

Vietnam and South Korea are expanding bilateral cooperation across scientific research and economic investment.

In early October 2026, South Korea committed $30 million in non-refundable aid to support the second phase of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST) project, spanning 2026 to 2033. This initiative focuses on strategic R&D in fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and advanced materials, alongside human resource training and technology commercialization.

Simultaneously, efforts to strengthen ties between small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have intensified. The Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (VINASME) and the Korea Federation of SMEs (KBIZ) agreed to expand investment cooperation, highlighted by an upcoming investment forum in Ho Chi Minh City. With over 10,000 South Korean enterprises currently investing in Vietnam, financial support is also being bolstered by the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK), which plans to open a representative office in Vietnam.
