Vietnam trade engagement with CPTPP markets
Overview
Vietnamese officials have urged domestic businesses to proactively utilize the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to diversify supply chains and raw material sources. Rather than reacting to market volatility, companies are encouraged to leverage the bloc to reorganize manufacturing and export processes.
Data from the first nine months of 2026 indicates specific growth in certain sectors, notably tilapia exports, which rose 51% to $7 million within the CPTPP bloc. This growth was primarily driven by Japan and Mexico. In Japan, imports surged following the approval of Vietnamese tilapia for use in sushi and sashimi processing, a sector requiring high food safety standards. While these figures show significant percentage increases, the CPTPP currently accounts for approximately 7% of Vietnam’s total tilapia export turnover, with the United States and Brazil remaining the dominant markets.
