Vietnam transport overloading enforcement

Authorities in Vietnam have intensified enforcement actions against overloaded and oversized transport to protect infrastructure and improve safety.

In Hue City, traffic police initiated patrols on National Highway 1, National Highway 49, and other local roads to address unauthorized vehicle modifications and weight violations. Colonel Le Viet Phuong, Head of the Hue City Traffic Police, directed task forces to proactively detect violations to prevent damage to transportation infrastructure.

Efforts have since expanded to include both road and waterway inspections. In Hue, officials are targeting overloaded vehicles to mitigate road degradation, such as potholes and sinking surfaces caused by heavy loads. Concurrently, waterway police in Hanoi have implemented 24/7 patrols on the Red River to crack down on overloaded vessels, citing increased accident risks during the rainy season due to reduced buoyancy and strong currents.

Building on these efforts, Hue City Police have launched intensified patrols under the direction of Colonel Nguyen Dinh Duong. This crackdown specifically targets vehicles exceeding weight limits and those with unauthorized cargo bed modifications. Officials noted that heavy loads contribute significantly to road deterioration, including cracks and potholes, particularly following heavy rainfall. During the initial phase of this intensified operation, police identified numerous violations involving weight limit breaches and improper documentation.
