Vietnamese fishing vessel maritime accidents

Overview

A series of maritime accidents involving Vietnamese fishing vessels has been reported in late August and early September 2026.

On August 25, the squid fishing vessel QNa-90859-TS lost contact near the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands during heavy seas and strong winds. While 32 crew members were rescued and taken to Truong Sa Lon Island, the incident resulted in at least one fatality and left 17 crew members missing. Search and rescue operations were coordinated by the Da Nang Border Guard and the Vietnam Coast Guard.

Following this, on August 27, the crew of vessel BĐ-98960 spotted a drifting gas canister south of the Truong Sa Islands, suggesting a nearby accident. On August 28, Captain Nguyen Van Huu and his crew located 30 exhausted fishermen. After coordinating with another fishing boat to rescue two additional people, all 32 survivors were handed over to fisheries surveillance forces. The rescue mission resulted in significant costs for the BĐ-98960, which suffered a total engine failure on September 8 and required towing to Khanh Hoa.

Other incidents include a mechanical failure on vessel BĐ-98090-TS near the Truong Sa Islands on September 1, where a broken winch component struck two crew members, causing one death and one serious injury. On September 5, the vessel GL-91620-TS sank approximately 62 nautical miles east of Quy Nhon; all five crew members were rescued by the captain of the vessel BĐ-97532-TS.

In a subsequent maritime incident, the fishing vessel Gia Lai rescued 30 fishermen found drifting at sea near the Truong Sa archipelago. Similar to previous rescue efforts, the Gia Lai later suffered engine failure and required towing to Khanh Hoa port, causing significant financial losses for the crew.
