Vila Viçosa heritage restoration and UNESCO candidacy
Overview
In early August 2026, the Ermida de São João Baptista in Vila Viçosa was inaugurated following a joint restoration effort by the municipality and the parish church workshop. Archbishop D. Francisco Senra Coelho described the project as a “timely and meritorious requalification,” noting its importance for the town’s candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status.
By early September, Vila Viçosa officially submitted its “Vila Viçosa – Sede Ducal” candidacy dossier to UNESCO. The submission was delivered by Mayor Inácio Esperança to Henrique Sim-Sim, Vice-President of CCDR Alentejo, to advance heritage valorization and management plans for the site.
