Violence against Colombian police officers
Overview
In late July 2026, four Colombian National Police officers went missing while patrolling the rural El Tambo area in Cauca. Following a multi-agency search operation involving canine teams and local volunteers, the officers were located alive and transferred to Popayán in stable condition.
By mid-August 2026, a separate incident occurred in the Norte de Santander department, where three officers from the Criminal Investigation and Interpol Directorate (Dijín) were kidnapped. Armed men intercepted the officers' vehicle on the road between Ocaña and Cúcuta. Authorities discovered the abandoned vehicle marked with ‘Farc-EP’ graffiti, leading to speculation regarding the involvement of FARC dissidents or the ELN. In response to the kidnapping, the National Police ordered a deployment of military and police forces to locate the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
