Violence against journalists during West Bank olive harvest

Overview

During the annual olive harvest in the West Bank, journalists covering local activities have been targeted in separate incidents involving Israeli settlers and military forces.

In early October, Agence France-Presse photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh was assaulted by armed Israeli settlers near Aqraba. Witnesses reported that attackers struck Ashtiyeh with rifle butts and stole his camera equipment. While a Palestinian man was shot in the foot during the same encounter, witnesses noted that Israeli soldiers were present nearby but did not intervene.

Days later, in the village of Deir Nizam, Anadolu Agency photojournalist Issam Rimawi was wounded by a rubber bullet fired by the Israeli army. The injury occurred while Rimawi was covering clashes between Palestinian farmers and settlers. The incident followed reports that settlers had prevented farmers from accessing their land for the harvest.
