Violence against journalists in Togo
Overview
Journalists in Togo have faced various forms of violence and physical assault, leading to calls for increased security and judicial accountability.
In September 2024, six journalists were targeted during a civic meeting in Lomé, where individuals threw objects and destroyed professional equipment. Two years later, the victims have issued a joint statement denouncing the “ongoing silence from judicial authorities” and demanding that perpetrators be identified.
In September 2026, the Patronat de la Presse Togolaise (PPT) condemned the kidnapping and assault of Roland Yaovi Kodjo, a reporter for Tampa Express. While covering a festival in Guerin-Kouka, Kodjo was intercepted by individuals in civilian clothing and a police uniform, handcuffed, blindfolded, and physically assaulted before being abandoned. The PPT noted the kidnappers likely mistook Kodjo for his publisher, Francisco Kossi Gbandi Napo-Koura. The organization is demanding an official investigation and security guarantees for journalists working outside the capital.
