Violence against women in Ankara
Overview
A series of violent incidents involving women and their families occurred in Ankara. In the Yenimahalle district, 56-year-old Doğan Yavuz allegedly shot and killed his former wife, Aynur Ekici, at her tailor shop before committing suicide. Witnesses reported that Ekici had been attempting to evade Yavuz, who had allegedly been stalking and harassing her since their 2021 divorce. A note found on Yavuz reportedly contained threats against Ekici and their two daughters.
In the Mamak district, a local neighborhood headman, identified as Bülent Kesen, allegedly shot and killed his 19-year-old daughter, Elif Kesen, and her 53-year-old partner, Ercan Oruç. The incident occurred on October 30 at the entrance of an apartment building. Reports indicate that Kesen went to the residence to confront his daughter regarding her relationship with Oruç, a married hairdresser. Following an argument, Kesen allegedly opened fire with a handgun.
In his initial statement to police, Kesen claimed he only intended to speak with his daughter but lost control after Oruç allegedly insulted him. A witness reported that Kesen stated he had “cleaned his honor” before surrendering to the authorities. Authorities are conducting an investigation, and an autopsy is expected to clarify whether Elif Kesen was pregnant at the time of her death.
