Violence and misconduct against South American footballs
Overview
Recent incidents in South American football have highlighted issues of misconduct and physical violence against match officials.
In Argentina, referee Valentín Pompei faced sporting sanctions after a leaked WhatsApp group chat revealed derogatory remarks about local clubs in the Liga de Fútbol de Olavarría. Pompei issued a public apology, stating, “Quiero expresar mis más sinceras disculpas por las expresiones agraviantes…”.
Physical violence has also been reported in youth and amateur matches. In Arequipa, Peru, referee Rommel Chambi Mamani was attacked by parents during a Sub-9 match, resulting in facial injuries. Tournament organizers called for “calma, al diálogo y al cumplimiento de las normas del juego limpio”.
In Fisherton, Argentina, 17-year-old referee Bautista Pereyra was assaulted and threatened with death by players and parents following the issuance of red cards during an 8th division match. Pereyra required medical attention after being pursued into the locker rooms by individuals stating, ‘We are going to wait for you at the exit and we are going to kill you.’ Local officials have expressed concern regarding the escalation of violence in youth sports.
