Violence in Jacarepaguá, Rio de Janeiro

Overview

Violence involving firearms has been reported in the Jacarepaguá region of Rio de Janeiro, affecting civilians during transit and local activities.

In late September, 53-year-old Flávio de Abreu Lira was killed by a gunshot while traveling on a BRT bus in the Transolímpica corridor near the Ventura station. The incident occurred during a Military Police operation in the nearby Dois Irmãos community, intended to combat criminal faction disputes. While the transit operator, Mobi-Rio, reported the victim was hit by a stray bullet, police suggested the shot may have originated from the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) faction. The operation resulted in the arrest of one individual and the seizure of three rifles, and the Asa Branca station was temporarily closed for forensic investigations.

In October, a 46-year-old rideshare driver was shot in the head in the Colônia region. Authorities suspect the victim may have been mistaken for a militia member during a territorial dispute between traffickers and militias. The victim was reported to be in critical condition following the attack.
