Violence in Kebbi State, Nigeria

Overview

Between October 22 and October 28, 2026, suspected members of the Lakurawa or Mamudawa terror groups launched coordinated attacks across the Koko-Besse, Besse, and Shanga riverine areas of Kebbi State. The violence involved assaults on villages such as Waiwayi, Kystu, Karwa, and Wawilaiyi, where attackers reportedly set houses on fire, looted shops, and stole food and motorcycles.

Reports from the Kebbi State Police Command indicate that the unrest resulted in the deaths of at least 11 civilians and one police inspector. Some local residents suggest the death toll may be higher than the official count. The conflict also involved local vigilantes known as Yan Sakai, who mobilized following rumors of cattle rustling and imminent attacks, leading to further fatalities and injuries.

The attacks caused widespread displacement, forcing residents to flee toward Koko town and other areas for safety. In response, Commissioner of Police Umar M. Hadejia and state police spokesperson SP Bashir Usman confirmed that security agencies have deployed additional personnel, cordoned off affected areas, and launched manhunts for the perpetrators to restore order.
