Violence on Greek public transport network

Overview

A series of violent incidents occurred on the Greek public transport network in late August 2026. On August 21, a station master at the Korydallos Metro station was assaulted by a passenger following a report of sexual harassment. The perpetrator was apprehended by the Hellenic Police under the ‘Ariadne Plan’ despite attacking officers during the intervention.

On August 22, a separate attack took place at the ‘Asklepieio Voula’ tram terminal, where a man reportedly attacked an 18-year-old passenger with either a knife or a broken glass bottle, causing leg injuries. The assailant also acted threateningly toward the tram driver before fleeing on foot.

In response to these events, transport unions, including the STASY Drivers' Union and the STASY Union of Station Masters and First Line Workers, have condemned the violence. The unions have characterized the situation as having ‘escaped all control’ and are demanding increased security, including the permanent presence of the Hellenic Police within trams and at stations, the deployment of private security, and a complete re-evaluation of existing security protocols.
