Violent incident in Paramaribo retail dispute

Overview

On September 15, 2026, a dispute over change at a supermarket on Martin Luther Kingweg in Paramaribo escalated into a shooting. The conflict involved a 60-year-old shopkeeper and a 24-year-old customer regarding a request for change versus the application of funds toward an outstanding debt.

The argument became physical when the customer allegedly damaged a cash register and threw a trash bin at the shopkeeper. As the customer and a friend fled, the shopkeeper pursued them and fired a shot, striking the customer in the knee. The victim was taken to the Academic Hospital Paramaribo.

Police seized a firearm, two cartridges, and a shell casing. Authorities confirmed the shopkeeper did not possess a weapon permit, and following consultation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the individual was taken into custody.
