Virginia Tech and Clemson ACC football matchup
Overview
Virginia Tech secured a 20-16 comeback victory over Clemson at Memorial Stadium, marking their first win at the venue since 2007. The win improves the Hokies’ record to 6-2 (3-2 ACC) and clinches bowl eligibility, their earliest such achievement since 2017.
Trailing 16-13 in the fourth quarter, quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer led an 11-play, 69-yard drive. On a fourth-and-1 play with 1:44 remaining, Grunkemeyer connected with tight end Luke Reynolds for a 5-yard touchdown to take the lead. Reynolds finished the contest with two touchdown receptions.
Clemson (4-3, 2-2 ACC) attempted a late rally led by freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds, but the Virginia Tech defense prevented a comeback. Defensive end Mylachi Williams recorded a sack on fourth down with 48 seconds left to force a turnover on downs, following a sack by cornerback Jaquez White.
Despite absorbing six sacks during the game, Grunkemeyer completed 20 of 32 passes for 156 yards. The Hokies’ defensive performance was highlighted by 13 tackles for loss. While Clemson controlled the third quarter by outscoring Virginia Tech 13-0 to take a 16-10 lead, the Hokies responded with 10 unanswered points in the final period. Clemson’s defense held Virginia Tech to 234 total yards and 70 rushing yards, but the Tigers' offense failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The loss marks a rare consecutive pair of Homecoming losses for Clemson.
