Overview

Vitali Iankovski, the head of South Ossetia’s representation in the Transnistrian region, has visited Tiraspol despite a five-year entry ban imposed by the Republic of Moldova in early 2026.

During his visit, Iankovski participated in propaganda rallies marking the 34th anniversary of the peacekeeping operation on the Dniester. He also held meetings with Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselski and the region’s foreign minister, Vitali Ignatiev. Krasnoselski used the meetings to comment on Georgian aggression in Ossetia and Abkhazia, noting that while Tbilisi has recognized these actions, Chisinau has not done so for 36 years.

Moldovan officials, including Vice-Premier Valeriu Chiveri and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi, expressed concern over how Iankovski bypassed border controls. President Maia Sandu suggested he may have utilized an identity unknown to Moldovan authorities. Iankovski reportedly holds both Russian and Ukrainian citizenship.
