Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has discussed the intersection of artificial intelligence and blockchain technology, focusing on safety risks and security benefits. Initially, Buterin proposed applying blockchain anti-collusion mechanisms to AI safety. He suggested that tools used in decentralized governance—such as secret ballots, privacy protections, and communication limits—could prevent autonomous AI agents from forming unauthorized coordination networks to bypass oversight. Buterin has also argued that AI could serve as a defensive tool to enhance cryptocurrency security. He highlighted the potential for AI to perform formal verification, using mathematical proofs to ensure software meets security standards. At the 12th Global Blockchain Summit, Buterin warned that AI advancements threaten traditional blockchain privacy, proposing ‘programmable privacy’ to counter AI’s ability to link wallet activity to real-world identities. He further cautioned that AI-accelerated mathematical breakthroughs could undermine lattice-based cryptography, such as ML-DSA and Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), within the next two years. Building on these concerns, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has urged the industry to enter a ‘bunker mode’ to prepare for threats from AI and quantum computing. Drake specifically warned that rapid AI-driven mathematical progress could compromise the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA)—the system securing Bitcoin and Ethereum—potentially within months rather than years. He posits that attackers could use large GPU clusters to recover private keys from public keys in as little as a week. To mitigate this, Drake recommends a controlled migration of assets to new wallet addresses where public keys are hidden behind a cryptographic hash. While acknowledging the cryptographic risk, Buterin has cautioned against ‘panic-driven, hasty migrations,’ noting that operational errors during such moves could lead to permanent asset loss. He expressed a preference for long-term transitions to hash-based cryptography over lattice-based methods, which he suggested might also be vulnerable to AI-driven mathematical progress. methods.
