VodafoneThree UK merger and network strategy
Overview
Following the full takeover of Three UK, Vodafone has outlined a significant growth and integration strategy for the combined VodafoneThree entity. The company increased its annual cost-saving target to £1 billion by the financial year ending March 2032, up from an initial goal of £700 million. This is supported by an £11 billion investment plan intended to upgrade the UK mobile network and expand its business unit.
Regarding technical implementation, VodafoneThree has decided to abandon the use of open RAN technology in the UK. Chief Network Officer Andrea Dona stated the decision was made because the current open RAN roadmap could not meet “strict deployment deadlines and spectrum requirements imposed by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).”
In place of open RAN, the operator has committed to a £2 billion contract with Nokia and Ericsson for specialized radio equipment. This replaces previous plans to utilize a mix of Samsung, Dell, and Intel hardware, which were sidelined to ensure regulatory compliance.
