Volkswagen Group TDI engine development
Overview
Volkswagen Group developed a series of high-performance diesel engines, referred to as superdiesels, to demonstrate engineering capabilities in premium brands such as Audi, Porsche, and Bentley. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the group prioritized TDI technology, producing large-displacement units including the 5.0 V10 TDI and the 6.0 V12 TDI.
Following these developments, the Audi 3.0 TDI V6 was introduced in 2003 to meet higher emission standards and improve brand reputation. This engine, along with a 2.7-liter variant, was utilized across various models including the Audi A8, A4, and A6, as well as the Volkswagen Phaeton, Touareg, and Porsche Cayenne.
