Vung Ang Economic Zone expansion in Vietnam

Overview

Vietnam has initiated planning adjustments to expand industrial and economic capacity, specifically focusing on land use and the Vung Ang Economic Zone in Ha Tinh province.

Initial efforts involved the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reviewing over 28,000 hectares of forest and forestry land, with proposals to remove approximately 7,386 hectares from forestry planning to accommodate residential areas and other land uses. Concurrently, the Prime Minister approved adjusted general planning for the Vung Ang Economic Zone through 2050 to increase its scale for industrial development, seaports, and logistics.

By early October 2026, the government formalized the expansion of the Vung Ang Economic Zone via Decision No. 1918/QD-TTg. The total area of the zone is set to increase to approximately 72,998 hectares, comprising 57,998 hectares of land and 15,000 hectares of sea area. The zone is intended to function as a multi-sectoral economic hub and a transport node for the North Central region, serving as a trade gateway between Central Vietnam, Laos, and Northeast Thailand. Authorities are also considering the implementation of a Free Trade Zone model to support regional socio-economic growth.
