In late July 2026 Walmart began rolling out two high‑tech initiatives that illustrate the retailer’s broader push to embed artificial intelligence and robotics across its operations. On July 20, the U.S. division announced an AI‑driven self‑checkout surveillance system that uses concealed cameras to compare shopper hand movements with scanner data, flagging possible missed scans within seconds and alerting staff via handheld devices. Walmart aims to have the system operating in roughly half of its U.S. stores by the end of the year, adding it to an existing suite of anti‑theft measures.

A few days later, on July 29, Walmart de México y Centroamérica unveiled its own AI‑based tools, this time focused on inventory health and fulfillment automation. An AI model now classifies stock as healthy or unhealthy and dynamically adjusts replenishment coverage, while a Goods‑to‑Person robotic system (GTP 2.0) deploys 67 autonomous robots in a large fulfillment centre, cutting internal travel by up to 80 % and raising order‑processing capacity and picking accuracy to 99 %. Together, these technologies are intended to improve product availability, lower logistics costs and strengthen the retailer’s e‑commerce competitiveness in Mexico and Central America.

The two deployments show Walmart’s coordinated effort to apply AI and robotics not only to loss‑prevention in stores but also to supply‑chain efficiency across its North‑American markets.
