Waste management and recycling initiatives in Europe

Efforts to improve recycling and waste management in Belgium and the Netherlands have focused on addressing consumer barriers and increasing accessibility.

In Belgium, research indicates that while many consumers are willing to recycle or repair smartphones, significant obstacles remain. Approximately 45% of surveyed Flemish consumers cited privacy concerns, while others noted confusion regarding disposal locations or the perceived difficulty of the process. This follows the implementation of the EU Right to Repair directive, which requires manufacturers to provide affordable repairs after warranties expire.

To improve accessibility, mobile collection services are being expanded. In Brussels, Bruxelles-Propreté has resumed its ‘Recypark Mobiles’ service, providing free disposal for bulky items and electronic waste across 13 communes, including dedicated reuse spaces for furniture and toys. Similarly, Heusden in the Netherlands is piloting a ‘Mobile Milieustraat’ program to allow residents to drop off small items, including electrical appliances and small chemical waste, at various locations.
