Waste management pilot projects in Portugal

Overview

Regional authorities in Portugal are initiating various pilot projects to improve waste management and environmental sustainability.

In the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, the Coordination and Regional Development Commission (CCDR-LVT) has proposed the ‘PAYT4CIRCULARITY’ project to the EU’s LIFE Programme. This initiative seeks to implement a ‘Pay-As-You-Throw’ model across municipalities including Lisbon, Oeiras, Cascais, Santarém, and Golegã to reduce undifferentiated waste and increase selective collection through economic incentives and behavioral science.

Concurrently, Viana do Castelo is launching a pilot project specifically targeting bulky waste. Starting in November, the Municipalized Services of Viana do Castelo (SMVC) will work with 16 local parishes to provide rotating industrial containers in designated areas to prevent illegal dumping and ensure controlled disposal.
