Water contamination incidents in the Czech Republic

Overview

The Czech Republic continues to manage separate water contamination incidents in the Klatov and Odolena Voda regions. In Klatov, the municipality of Předslav is managing uranium levels in local wells through dilution and the use of rented water tankers for approximately 400 residents.

In the Odolena Voda region, lead contamination continues to affect approximately 15,000 residents across 12 municipalities. While testing at major reservoirs in Odolena Voda and Máslovice has shown lead levels below hygienic limits, specific areas remain unsafe. For example, a sample from Postřižín recorded 28.9 micrograms of lead per liter, which is nearly triple the safety limit.

Středočeské vodárny (Central Bohemian Waterworks) is flushing the distribution network and supplying it exclusively with uncontaminated water. Residents are advised to use tap water only for hygiene and sanitation, rather than drinking or food preparation. Emergency water cisterns are being deployed to schools, nurseries, and medical facilities.

The Czech Police and the Czech Environmental Inspectorate are investigating the cause, focusing on contaminated wells or potential leakage from the former Kasova Rokle landfill. Criminal charges have been filed against an unknown perpetrator regarding potential environmental damage caused by negligence.
