Water-related emergencies and drownings in Colombia

Overview

Heavy rainfall and dangerous water conditions have led to several rescue incidents and a fatality in Colombia.

On October 13, authorities conducted multiple rescue operations following heavy rains. In Soledad, Atlántico, a police officer rescued a 13-year-old boy swept away by the Salao stream. In Bogotá, emergency responders rescued two men who were carried for more than 15 blocks through a rainwater canal on Avenida NQS.

By October 16, a drowning incident was reported in Puerto Colombia. A 22-year-old man, Elías Rafael Pitalúa Peralta, died after entering the sea during a nighttime celebration despite police warnings. While he successfully brought a friend toward the shore, he was swept away by the current. The Puerto Colombia Lifeguard Corps has since urged the public to respect beach hours and avoid life-threatening behaviors.
