Overview
In early August 2026, reports from Cameroon highlighted the dangers of unsafe water sites following heavy rains. In Bamenda, two siblings were swept away by runoff water, while in Douala, a 9-year-old boy drowned in an unsanitary water retention basin. Firefighters noted that polluted and unprotected water points present a lethal risk to children.
By mid-August, similar fatal incidents occurred in both Chad and Cameroon. In N’Djamena, Chad, two children drowned in a sand extraction quarry that had filled with rainwater. In Maroua, Cameroon, a 9-year-old boy and his mother died after falling into a water-filled excavation. These drowning incidents were accompanied by various other reports of crime and accidents in the region, including sexual abuse investigations, stabbings, and theft.
