Water security and reservoir fluctuations in Brazil

Overview

Water security challenges have emerged in Brazil, characterized by extreme regional variations in reservoir levels and water quality.

In Rio Grande do Norte, hydrological monitoring indicated severe scarcity in certain areas, with 14 out of 69 reservoirs operating at less than 10% capacity. The Passagem das Traíras dam was noted as being at a critical 0.03% capacity. While some reservoirs maintained stocks above 80%, others faced extreme drought. Simultaneously, in Barra do Piraí, heavy rainfall increased turbidity in the Paraíba do Sul River, forcing water treatment stations to reduce operations to approximately 70% capacity.

Subsequent data from the State Secretariat for the Environment and Water Resources (Semarh) reported that Rio Grande do Norte's reservoirs reached an average of 46.1% capacity. While this figure represents a 2.24 percentage point increase compared to the same period in 2025, levels remain lower than those seen in 2023 and 2024. Despite the average increase, five reservoirs—Itans, Passagem das Traíras, Dourado, Caldeirão de Parelhas, and Mundo Novo—remain dry, and several others continue to operate at levels below 10%.
