Water supply crisis in Colombia
Overview
A water supply crisis has developed across several regions in Colombia. Initially, Medellín implemented water rationing due to a severe deficit in the Piedras Blancas system caused by drought and El Niño.
By early September, the crisis expanded to include eleven municipalities in the Santander department, such as Málaga, Barichara, and Socorro. This shortage is attributed to a combination of drought and infrastructure failures in intake structures and conduction lines. In response, authorities have begun deploying water tankers to provide minimum supplies to the affected areas while attempting repairs.
