Recovery efforts in Hawaii continue following the impact of Hurricane Lala, which caused significant destruction, including the loss of at least 100 homes, widespread power outages, and at least two confirmed deaths. While Governor Josh Green has requested a presidential emergency declaration to support recovery in Hawai‘i, Maui, and Honolulu, the state faces additional threats from Tropical Storm Moke. Moke is passing south of the islands, with its center located approximately 310 to 320 miles south of Hilo. Forecasters warn of a high risk of life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides, particularly on the windward and southeast slopes of the Big Island, as the ground remains saturated from Lala. Rainfall projections for the Big Island include 5 to 10 inches, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 15 inches. Efforts to restore electricity are underway, though progress has been hindered by weather impacts from Moke. As of August 24, more than 6,300 customers on Hawaii Island remain without power. Restoration efforts are being bolstered by the arrival of additional utility crews and specialized equipment from Maui, Oahu, and Southern California. Southern California Edison has deployed 50 workers to the Puna and Waimea areas, utilizing equipment transported to Hilo via military air shipment. Hawaiian Electric senior vice president Jim Alberts noted that coordination between state leadership and multiple agencies is essential to accelerate recovery. On August 26, President Donald Trump approved a federal emergency declaration for Hawaii. This authorizes FEMA to provide assistance to Hawaii County, Maui County, and the City and County of Honolulu to protect public health, safety, and property. The declaration comes as total damages from Lala are estimated at $81.4 million, with the Big Island accounting for $49.3 million, Oahu $25.6 million, and Maui $6.4 million.
