On September 14, 2026, Spain continues to experience intense heat and atmospheric stability, with temperatures in many regions significantly exceeding seasonal averages. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) reports that extreme temperatures are reaching the southwest, with Badajoz and Ourense expected to approach 39 °C. Other hot regions include Sevilla, Córdoba, and Jaén, where temperatures may reach 37 or 38 °C. In central Spain, Madrid is forecasted to reach 34 °C. In Navalmoral de la Mata, temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 36 °C with very low humidity of 15% during the hottest hours. Yellow alerts for heat have been issued for Andalusia, Asturias, Cantabria, and parts of Galicia and Extremadura. In the Canary Islands, the situation is particularly severe. The government has activated dual alerts for both high temperatures and calima (Saharan dust). Public health authorities have raised the health risk level to red in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, recommending that vulnerable populations avoid outdoor activities between 11:00 and 18:00. A pre-alert for calima has also been declared for Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where high concentrations of airborne dust pose risks to those with respiratory issues. The high temperatures have increased the risk of wildfires, which is currently rated as ‘very high’ in the north, east, and south of the peninsula. Specifically in La Palma, authorities have closed trails and prohibited fires due to these elevated wildfire risks. A weather shift is anticipated mid-week, as a meteorological trough is forecasted to bring a progressive decline in temperatures and increased instability, potentially bringing rainfall to the Cantabrian coast and the Pyrenees.
