Extreme weather contrasts across Spain
Overview
The weather instability across Spain has intensified, characterized by a sharp contrast between extreme heat in the south and severe storm activity in the east and north. In the Balearic Islands, Mallorca has transitioned from extreme heat of up to 39 degrees Celsius to unsettled conditions. AEMET issued orange warnings for the island due to expected thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds, with localized rainfall potentially reaching 40 liters per square meter in a single hour and wind gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour. In Menorca, wind gusts have been recorded as high as 121 kilometers per hour.
In Catalonia, the situation has escalated significantly. Following forecasts of intense rainfall, Meteocat activated the INUNCAT emergency plan. Severe storms and torrential downpours have struck southern Catalonia, specifically the Tarragona province and the Baix Penedès region. Rainfall totals have reached extreme levels, with some areas like Roda de Berà recording up to 275 liters per square meter, while El Vendrell and Torredembarra previously saw approximately 140 liters. Parts of the Tarragona coast and Baix Penedès also saw accumulations exceeding 200 liters.
These storms caused significant flooding, leading to the evacuation of approximately 400 people, including 300 from the Arc de Berà campsite in Roda de Berà and 100 youths from a nightclub in Coma-ruga, El Vendrell. The number of injuries has risen to at least 11 people, including a 17-year-old girl in critical condition following a wall collapse at the Port of Roda de Berà. Infrastructure damage includes the closure of the N-340 highway and the disruption of multiple Rodalies rail lines at Sant Vicenç de Calders. Additionally, the Catalan government has faced scrutiny regarding the use of the ES-Alert system, as officials stated the meteorological risk level did not meet the threshold for a mass mobile alert.
