Weather mitigation and relief in Rio Grande do Sul

Overview

In Rio Grande do Sul, authorities and local entities have implemented measures to address weather-related damage. The state government launched a public notice to support anti-hail systems in the Serra and Campos de Cima da Serra regions, involving fourteen municipalities including Caxias do Sul and Bento Gonçalves. This initiative, supported by over R$ 6 million from Sicredi Serrana, utilizes silver iodide generators and sonic cannons to mitigate agricultural and urban damage.

Following severe storms, Governor Eduardo Leite announced an additional R$ 10 million allocation for municipalities in the state's southern zone to cover urgent expenses, such as roof tiles for damaged homes. This follows a prior allocation of up to R$ 20 million from the Rio Grande Plan Fund (Funrigs) intended to restore road and street accessibility damaged during storms in July and August.

Recent disaster recovery efforts have expanded through federal intervention. The Brazilian National Civil Defense authorized the release of R$ 3.1 million to support recovery and response efforts in seven municipalities: Alegrete, Arroio Grande, Faxinal do Soturno, Paim Filho, Santiago, São José do Norte, and São Lourenço do Sul.

In Caxias do Sul, where historic rainfall led to a state of emergency, four fatalities, and hundreds of displaced persons, the federal government enabled the ‘saque-calamidade’ (calamity withdrawal) from the FGTS fund. Eligible residents can access up to R$ 6,220 through a digital process via the FGTS application.
