Web browser security updates against online scams

Overview

Major web browser developers, including Google and Microsoft, are implementing new security features to combat deceptive online threats and social engineering tactics.

Microsoft Edge has introduced an AI-powered Scareware Blocker to detect psychological manipulation, such as forced full-screen modes and fake system warnings. Following these developments, the Edge 156 update expanded these capabilities to target deceptive notification permissions. The browser now automatically disables notifications from sites identified as malicious by Microsoft Defender SmartScreen or the Scareware Blocker. Microsoft also added a “Block and report” option, allowing users to submit URLs and screenshots of deceptive pages to the company.

Google Chrome has similarly enhanced its protection through its Enhanced Protection mode. This system provides standard pop-up alerts for unreliable sites and high-intensity red full-screen warnings for sites identified as dangerous, aiming to prevent users from falling victim to malware and fraudulent tech support scams.
