Weija Dam spillage in Ghana

Overview

Following heavy rainfall in the Densu River catchment area, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) announced the resumption of controlled spillage at the Weija Dam to protect its structural integrity. As water levels reached 45.2 feet—approaching the 46-foot safety threshold—evacuation orders were issued for several downstream settlements, including Tetegu, Oblogo, and Bojo Beach.

GWL officials clarified that the spillage is a necessary precaution to prevent a potential dam collapse, which they warned could cause significantly greater loss of life and property than the controlled release. While acknowledging that the resulting flooding is “disheartening,” GWL stated that a breach could also disrupt water supplies to western Accra for years. The company also noted that encroachment on river buffer zones has exacerbated the impact of rising water levels.
