Welsh Gender Service surgical suspension

Overview

The Welsh Gender Service has suspended all new and existing referrals for gender-affirming surgeries, as well as scheduled operations, to facilitate an independent clinical review. This action was requested by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee (NWJCC) following concerns regarding the service’s assessment and governance processes.

Data from 2025-26 showed that the Welsh service had “significantly higher rates” of surgical referrals compared to similar services in England. In response, the NWJCC has escalated the service to Level 3, a formal NHS process involving increased oversight and monitoring. While surgical-related services are paused, other aspects of the service, including hormone therapy, psychological care, and speech and language therapy, continue to operate.

In September 2026, the Welsh Government announced a £145 million investment in NHS Wales intended to reduce waiting lists and eliminate two-year treatment delays. This funding includes £100 million for waiting time reduction, £25 million for new surgical and diagnostic hubs, and £20 million for estate maintenance.

Simultaneously, a Senedd petition calling for the immediate resumption of gender-affirming surgeries has gained over 13,000 signatures in less than 48 hours. Launched by Christopher May, the petition urges the Welsh Government and the NWJCC to reverse the suspension of surgical referrals and assessments. Organizers are specifically calling for scheduled operations to resume for patients who have already completed assessments while the independent clinical review is conducted.
